What I see around me

A city identifies itself not only by its people, its architecture or its plazas, but also by its billboards, posters and graffiti.  That is why I have gone out to photograph the signs in the area surrounding my house.  I post the sequence here so you can see the images and messages that surround me.

“Stand firm, helmsman, Granma commands history” (See footnote at link)

“Without Revolution we would not have been able to dream of developing in our country a great sports movement”

“Let’s dedicate ourselves daily to strict performance of duty”

“That absurd First World consumes three quarters of the energy produced in the world”

“Revolution Forever”

“(CDRs) Vigilant and Combative”

“From these men comes a people”

[The profiles are: Julio Antonio Mella, Camilo Cienfuegos, and Che Guevara]

“Freedom now [for the Five Heroes]” (See footnote at link)

“5 hours of the blockade [the U.S. embargo] is  equivalent to the annual dialysis needed for all the patients in the country”

“CDR [Committee for the Defense of the Revolution] There is no truce”

    Gracias, otra interesante pieza

  3. Socialist ads suck, they are an important key in the brainwashing machine. Tell me about one person that won’t feel bad reading sign number 9 “5 hours of the blockade…” and people inside the island don’t have a way to know if that is true or not. I would say that one day of demonstration in front of the American Consulate cost the country same than the annual dialysis needed for all the patients in the country. So!

  4. Funny that they would single out the U.S. embargo as a problem. The embargo is an American one, not a blockade. The Cuban government can trade with anyone, it’s just that the U.S. will not. Just because I will not trade with you doesn’t mean that you can’t trade with somebody else. There’s Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Canada, etc. that are willing to trade, but they must bring up the American trade embargo as the bogeyman. Sad, really.

  5. In my travels to Cuba and my many nights spent with local friends in villages and in their homes I have seen these signs all over, from store fronts to roadside to just about anywhere. I photographed them as I was fascinated, I have dozens of pictures of different onces at home on my computer. Signs that the revolution is still alive and healthy, quotes by Che, by Jose Marti, by Fidel… Keep the people believing. If you keep repeating it long enough, they might believe the signs.

I think that you can also define a nation/city/state by its graffiti. The graffiti I’ve seen in Cuba is mostly pro-castro, pro-communism…. I’m not sure exactly what to read into that but I’ve always been fascinated by this.

  7. BUENO MEJOR VER ESO QUE LOS MCDONALDS, LOS CARROS Y LA MIERDA IMPERIALISTA.

VIVA FIDEL, VIVA LA PROPAGANDA COMUNISTA, VIVA RUSIA, VIVAN LOS CHINOS Y EL SOCIALISMO SERA SIEMPRE EL FUTURO DE LA HUMANIDAD.

  8. You’re lucky! The signs I see around my house are everywhere, high and low, on both sides of the street. Every imaginable capitalist advertising blots out the green trees and the blue sky. I’d trade your scenery for mine any day. I wish I had your ‘problem’!

  10. Che Kerouac: You are missing the point completely!

She is complaining about the nature of all the signs of Cuba, how they reflect a reality that only exists in the minds of the rulers and has nothing to do with what really happens. How they try to repeat and repeat a false idea so people think it’s true. And also give a false image to the visitors.

This has nothing to do with the amount of signs in the Capitalist world, please, don’t misinterpret something so serious as the Communist way of propaganda which is the real subject of this post, giving an example of a whole different thing.

You in fact DIDN’T UNDERSTAND A THING.

  11. Cuban is right, but people see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, and believe what they want to believe. Those signs are constant reminders of who runs the show, of who is in control, and that someone is not you. You have two choices at this point. 1. Go along with the program and feel as though you are in control and that you do have control, or 2. fight it and run the risk of all sorts of bad things happening to you. This is to say nothing of the two-faced life that most lead, to wit, publicly supporting the revolucion and it’s bad guys, all the while hating it inside and just trying to deal with it. Are there true believers? I would imagine so. Just look at some of the posts here. There are Communists in Amerika as well. It’s all about control. Lucky for most of us, we choose not to submit to that crap. Being from New Orleans, I can assure you, we live free. We won’t put up with this crap, even Amerikan socialists and communists.

  12. Cuban and Che are both right. The capitalist advertising in the U.S. is, in my opinion, brainwashing propaganda in a country that is run by corporations. To keep the general population in a consumerism stupor and line their pockets.

  13. Thank you Bonnie. Obviously the Cuban don’t get it. The brainwashing we receive is in our heads 24/7. If the Gusanos ever come back and take over Cuba they will see what we have to deal with in the States.
