Hands emerging from well-cut suits at the UN pressed the red, green or yellow button today to rule on the blockade/embargo *. Over the last few weeks, television has thrown at us the entire collection of statistics, testimonies and analysis on the ravages of the trade restrictions affecting Cuba. The issue has been so manipulated by politicians that, from down here, many have chosen to “press the off button… to make it shut up.”
Anticipating the outcome of the vote, I would like to refer to another siege in effect every day. This one prevents me from entering or leaving my country freely, from associating with a political group or creating a small family business. An internal blockade, constructed on a base of limitations, control and censorship, has cost Cubans countless material and spiritual losses. I try to match my mood to that of the newspaper Granma—which requires a huge effort—and make myself care about the outcome of today’s debate in the United Nations. I go out into the street and what is most glaring are the continuing restrictions imposed on us by our leaders; the wall that no one in the UN will vote against today.
What if they let us press the button! What if we could vote to rid ourselves of the fence that blockades us within the Island! I would leave my finger on the green button for many days.
* I refuse to call it either of the coined terms; they already know how bad-mannered we linguists are about these things. In my daily conversations I simply say, “the pretext,” the clumsy “justification” that is so very convenient for those who block us in here.

I can’t even imagine what it must be liked to feel trapped by your own country, never being able to travel to other countries. I visited Cuba at the beginning of the year, the tourist route, there are a lot of values instilled, however there are also alot of very odd rules that someone from a small town in England finds very hard to understand. I hope one day you get to press the button xx
The problem with this vote is that it is useless and non-biding. The US does not care about UN resolutions. The never have and probably never will. The UN has voted on this for the last 17 years and every year the result is the same: The embargo is bad. Every year the president, whoever he is at the time, shuts his eyes and pretends it didn’t happen. The vote was something crazy like 185 to 3 and still won’t change their foreign policy.
As for the attitude of the Cuban government towards traveling abroad, I think it is appalling. The Cuban people have so much to teach the rest of the world. Even if it’s just their values and their caring nature. The world could use more of that. I have a few Cuban friends who have traveled abroad, either as professionals and one with a rare travel visa. 99% of them return to Cuba, they still love their country, they’re not going to start trying to bring down the government. They just want what everyone else want. The freedom to see the world, freedom to think whatever they like and the freedom to provide for their loved ones.
Yoani, do not give up the fight. If there’s anything I can do from here or any of us can do I am sure we will try.

El problema con este voto es que es inútil y no-que presagia. Los E.E.U.U. no cuidan sobre resoluciones de la O.N.U. Nunca el tener y probablemente nunca. La O.N.U ha votado sobre esto por los 17 años pasados y cada año el resultado es igual: El embargo es malo. Cada año el presidente, quienquiera él está en ese entonces, cierra sus ojos y los finge didn’ t sucede. El voto era algo loco como 185 a 3 y aún won’ cambio de t su política exterior.
En cuanto a la actitud del gobierno cubano hacia viajar al extranjero, pienso que está aterrando. La gente cubana tiene tanto enseñar al resto del mundo. Incluso si it’ s apenas sus valores y su naturaleza que cuida. El mundo podía utilizar más de eso. Tengo algunos amigos cubanos que han viajado al extranjero, cualquier como profesionales y uno con una visa rara del recorrido. el 99% de ellos de vuelta a Cuba, todavía aman su país, they’ el re no ir a comenzar a intentar derribar al gobierno. Apenas quieren lo que quiere cada una. La libertad para ver el mundo, libertad para pensar de lo que él tiene gusto y la libertad a prever sus amadas.
Yoani, no da para arriba la lucha. Si hay cualquier cosa que puedo hacer de aquí o cualesquiera de nosotros pueden hacerme están seguros que intentaremos.

Es mi segundo comentario acerca de la Generacion Y porque soy parte de ella. La labor que Yoanis y los demas que enfrentan dia a dia la vida en Cuba, la persecusion, las presiones y la falta de todo es de admirar. Estos foros permiten que todos opinemos y expongamos los puntos de vistas. Es vital entender el pasado para saber que presente tenemos y por que. Hay personas que hablan de embargo, politicos que lo hacen del bloqueo y de la votacion de UN. Vamos a recordar que un gobierno(no el pais)que a mi persona como a millones de mis compatriotas a privado de los derechos humanos elementales recogidos en la Carta de Derechos de la ONU preside hoy esa comision de derechos humanos. Vamos a hablar de embargo: En los primeros anos del proceso en Cuba el gobierno expropio, expulso, privo y alejo al pais de los elementos vitales que impulsaban la ya un poco maltrecha economia cubana. Llego el capital sovietico y de los paises socialistas. Cuba adeuda con Rusia alrededor de 20,000 millones de USD, a la banca de Paris otros 5000 millones(“impagables”). Dinero mal invertido en proyectos vanos y en ideas no fructiferas. Dinero que se convirtio en corrupto dejando atras la corrupcion de los gobiernos anteriores por un buen trecho. Se “fueron ” los curas, ingenieros, los doctores , todo profesional que tuviera 2 dedos de frente. Mi abuelo, un chino de Canton que llego a Cuba huyendo del comunismo chino vendio los nehocios y saco lo que pudo. Cuba quedo con las arcas vacias y vacias todavia las tiene hoy. Bloqueo? La politica de los EEUU puede que no sea la mas acertada pero el embargo real es el reino autoritario, que menosprecia a su pueblo noble y acorrala a traves del miedo la alcanzable opportunidad de ser LIBRE. Yo lo soy, un poco, me falta mi media naranja, la Cuba que imaginamos.
